Letter from State Senator Tom McClintock

June 11, 2007

Dear San Diegans:

I am writing to you to express my strong support for Carl DeMaio’s candidacy for the San Diego City Council.

Carl DeMaio has dedicated his career to reforming government. He has the experience, ideas, and courage to take on the City’s tough financial problems.  He has the integrity, honesty, and independence to restore public trust to City Hall.

I first met Carl when he did a top-to-bottom review of the California state budget in 2002 where he outlined the excessive spending and poor performance of the state government under then-Governor Gray Davis.  His California Citizens’ Budget Plan in 2003 became one of the key justifications for the Recall Election and his ideas for reform were quoted chapter and verse by the candidates for Governor that year.

I have also followed Carl’s efforts to reform San Diego city government with great interest. Carl was the first to speak out on the City’s financial crisis.  He took on the Democrat city council, the powerful labor unions and the crowd of special interests who benefited from the corruption at City Hall.  When they pressured him to back off, he stood his ground and took his case directly to the public.

Carl has outlined a bold plan to fix San Diego’s financial problems.  He has been an advisor to and supporter of Mayor Jerry Sanders’ reform agenda.  In the last election, Carl helped author and lead the campaign to pass Proposition B (pension reform) and Proposition C (managed competition).

San Diego taxpayers will be well-served by having Carl DeMaio—the city’s leading fiscal conservative—on City Council to act as the eyes and ears of taxpayers.  As he has shown through his leadership in the past, Carl will be a voice of responsibility, integrity, and accountability in your city.

I ask that you join me in strongly supporting Carl DeMaio for San Diego City Council.

Sincerely,

Tom McClintock
State Senator
